Why Lagos Felt Right

Lagos was a deliberate choice. Not where I grew up — but exactly where I needed to be. This is why.

I grew up in  Asaba.

A small city. The capital of Delta State. Quiet in the way that cities sitting beside powerful things tend to be quiet — the oil wealth runs beneath everything, but the streets do not announce it.

I did not grow up in Lagos. But I grew up watching Lagos.

Through the music. Through the fashion. Through the way the city produced culture and exported it everywhere — to the rest of Nigeria, to the diaspora, to anyone paying attention. Lagos had a particular kind of energy that I followed from a distance for years. Not because I wanted to be from there. But because I understood what it represented.

When I decided to build 19:89 Haute, the question of where to launch was not a difficult one.

Lagos was the only answer.

Not for sentimental reasons. For commercial ones. Lagos is the fashion hub of Nigeria. It is where the customer I was building for lives, works, and moves. It is where taste is formed and validated. It is where a brand either earns its place or does not.

Launching anywhere else would have been the easier choice. Asaba would have been familiar. But familiar was not what the brand needed. The brand needed the pressure of Lagos — the competition, the discernment, the audience that has seen everything and is not easily impressed.

That pressure made 19:89 Haute sharper.

It forced a standard. When you present something to Lagos, you cannot be approximate. You cannot rely on goodwill or local loyalty. You have to be genuinely good. The city will tell you immediately whether you are.

We launched. We sold across the country. And the standard that Lagos demanded of us became the standard we now hold ourselves to everywhere — in London, in every market we are building toward.

I chose Lagos for commercial reasons. But what it gave us in return was more than commerce.

It gave us a benchmark. A test. A proof of concept built in the most demanding arena available to us.

That is worth more than any comfortable beginning.

19:89 Haute began in Lagos because Lagos does not accept anything less than real.

Neither do we.
